Annual spring flowers show was not simply a congregation of flowers’ lovers rather it was a chance of entertainment and relaxation for Lahorites, reports UZMA ALEEM
Floral fiesta When trees start wearing new leaves, aura of Lahore begins to change. Spring arrives, the most romantic of times. So it brings happiness and adds hues to life as flowers blossom and birds sing and chirp happily. Lahore, the city of gardens covers itself with multicolour flowers and it is then that the festivities of Spring Festival, locally known as the ‘Jashan-e-Baharan’ get into their full swing. Likewise all over the country, the spring is welcomed with full bloom flowers, dance of men and trained animals and music. Some of the festivals and shows are worth observing like the annual floral exhibition.
March is the time to celebrate the festival of spring, to say goodbye to the frosts and fogs of winter and welcome the warmth of the blossoming spring. In Pakistan, annual floral exhibitions of four major cities and capital are associated with spring because of the vivid colours of delicate flowers.
Despite all the security and political chaos Lahore continued its tradition of holding annual spring floral festival. This annual spring floral festival, popularly known as flower show, was commenced from March 21 to March 27 at Jinnah Garden.
The festival was regularly held by PHA in collaboration with Millat Tractors and representatives from public and private sector.
The show was keenly contested by professionals, amateurs and organizations working in the field of horticulture.
Actually this show was not simply a congregation of lovers of flowers and foliage. It was a gathering to know what type of plants could be amassed, cultivated and grown by men anywhere in this world. Especially to learn appropriate techniques regarding, art of display, colour combination, hue, fragrance and hybridization. The Bonsai experts, for example, appeared undoubtedly at par with ancient and highly sophisticated Chinese and Japanese technique and quality in this regard. Meanwhile, the display by Floral Art Society was also appreciated as it had also won laurels at international exhibitions and secured top positions in artistic display of flowers.
‘Pakistani floral art experts have done very well at international exhibitions competing against organisations that are known as goliaths in the field. Considering the fact that the panel of the judges (at the foreign exhibitions) hail from different countries who demand nothing short of perfection and do not give any favour to any one, when our experts show an edge over others there, then it does give a feeling of pride. This is a proof of their competence on the global level,’ a senior member of the floral art society said.
Mujtaba Ali, a florist, said that this year the flower show had many new dimensions. Seasonal plants attracted the visitors. He added that these plants bloomed and worth visiting included amaranthus, cosmos, dahlia, godetia, helichrysum ladies lace, marigold, rudbekia, sun flower, ageratum, balsam, cineraria, escholtizia, lupin, poppy, stock, verbena, zinnia, alyssum, candy tuft, dianthus, gompherena, linaria, matricaria, natustium, pansy, petunia, impatiens, salvia, phlox, portulaca.
During the show each species had their identification plate for people’s convenience. Some climbers, creepers, perennials, carnation, bulbs, and a plethora of beautiful plants recently imported for the show were also on display.
‘The Bonsai exhibits and our experts also follow the technique as defined by Japanese experts about this artistic novelty,’ Ameer Alvi, a Bonsai expert said while adding that he got training from Japanese experts for introducing modern trends in Bonsai making.
He further said that Bonsai gardens of different dimensions should be grown at homes, hotels, factories, industrial units, mosques, macro and mini parks, road side plantation, round-abouts, clubs, hospitals, and educational institutions.
‘Lack of interest towards horticulture is one of the misfortunes for the people who will be much happier if their homes, balconies and neighbourhood are green, colourful and pleasant in a depressing environment mounting debt and sharp rise in street crimes. This is one of the mandatory responsibilities of the government,’ said Ammar Al Nasir, a botanist of GC University Lahore. Whereas talking about the spring flower show she added that it was a positive activity, and people should be given a chance of relaxation and entertainment.
Yellow, pink and red are the colours of Spring festival, so these colours dominate everywhere i.e. in the flowers and in the clothes, especially in the clothes of women. During the floral show these colours also dominated as Marigold dominated. The marigold pavilion was decorated and created with tropical settings, balanced on dried trunks of trees that took the viewers to an attractive landscape.
Moreover, one of the most attractive parts of the show was amateurs’ floral arrangement. The amateurs worked furiously with innovation to give meaning, glamour and language to different species of flowers and plants.
The exhibition ran for six days. This show provided an opportunity to people to purchase numerous species of plants grown in nurseries or imported for the show. Such as orchids, bonsai, foliage crotons, cacti, evergreen creepers that would remain healthy and add comfort to the homes throughout the year.
